The story behind the Gastown Steam Clock
Contrary to its old-fashioned appearance, the Gastown Steam Clock is not as ancient as some might think. It was built in 1977 by Canadian clockmaker Raymond Saunders, commissioned as part of an effort to revitalize the historic Gastown district. The city wanted to preserve Gastown’s heritage charm while also preventing the underground steam vents from becoming hazardous. Today, it stands as one of the few working steam clocks in the world, combining artistry with engineering ingenuity.
How does it work???
Every quarter, the clock releases steam through a series of whistles, playing the Westminster chimes. On the hour, it produces a grander display of steam ad sound. The clock is connected to Vancouver’s underground steam heating system, which provides the energy needed to keep the whistles functioning.
